For the first time in New Orleans, there will be a uniformed, standardized garbage collection process, utilizing state-of-the-art collection carts, that will help in reducing residents exposure to disease, will prevent rodents and animals from getting into trash and dirtying neighborhoods, and overall, begin the effort to promote a cleaner city and healthier environment for all residents. In addition, each resident will have access to a customer service center that is equipped with tracking devices to improve accountability and service. Further, the new collection carts will have a bar code that will enable customer service representatives in assisting residents with questions and issues that involve theft, collection concerns and overall improve customer’s experience with their collection needs.
All residents must submit a registration form to receive a cart. The registration process will begin December 5, 2007. Registration forms are available on the City of New Orleans website, www.nola.gov, and in the lobby of City Hall, 1300 Perdido Street, New Orleans, LA . The City will also conduct special registration campaigns in neighborhoods throughout the Metropolitan area. Stay tuned to local broadcasts for more information.
Each household and small business will receive one (1), 96 gallon standard collection cart free of charge. The 96-gallon cart has the capacity to hold 250 pounds of household garbage. Special consideration is being given to seniors (65 yrs of age and older) and persons with disabilities. Those who qualify for special assistance may request the smaller collection carts, 32 gallon or 64 gallon cart.
Initial delivery of carts is scheduled to begin February 5, 2007 and will continue throughout the city until April, 2007. Twice a week garbage collection will also begin January 2, 2007.
On the first day of collection with the new cart, residents may place their old empty trash can at the curb to be disposed of with their trash.
The household or small business at each location is responsible for the lost cart unless it obtains and presents a police report to the city for the theft. Once the theft is reported and documented each vendor is responsible to locate the bar coded cart by use of a tracking system. If the cart is not located within seven (7) days, the household or small business will be responsible for the cart replacement fee.
Solid waste collection days will change for some residents. You can go on-line to the City’s website or contact:
No. All trash must be placed inside the collection carts for collection on residents designated trash collection days. If residents place trash outside of the cart, they will receive a notice recommending that the resident purchase an additional collection cart.
Yard waste such as leaves and grass clipping should be bagged and placed next to the cart on the Second collection day. Yard waste items are tree limbs, grass clippings, scrubs, etc. Tree limbs should be bundled in 4-foot lengths, weighing no more than 75 pounds. Residents who set out yard waste more than 24 hours before their scheduled pick-up will be subject to a fine.
To collect bulky waste –sofas, mattresses, tires, and other large items-residents must call the customer service center to schedule collection. Bulky waste should not be placed out for collection 24 hours prior to the scheduled date given for collection. If residents place bulky items out more than 24 hrs prior to the scheduled collection, they will be fined! Small businesses do not receive bulky waste collection services. Bulky waste includes those items that are not suitable to go into standard collection carts, generally due to weight and size. For example white goods, sofas, mattresses, tires and other large items.
Dogs, cats, and other small animals will only be collected from households and small businesses if the animal is put in a bag and brought to the curb for collection with solid waste. In the event that such animals are discovered on City streets, contact 311 or the Customer Service Center to have the animal removed.
You may contact each vendor on-line web site or contact the Customer Service Centers directly where a trained, knowledgeable service representative will document, track, resolve and respond to comments/complaints.
You can go on-line to Richard’s Disposal and Metro Disposal web site to find a list of holidays where service will not be provided. In the event that one of these holidays falls on your scheduled collection day, service will resume on the next scheduled collection day.
