City of New Orleans Bureau of Revenue Tax Collection

Our Mission:

  • To administer and enforce ordinances pertaining to the collection of sales, hotel-motel, parking and various other taxes, licenses and permits in accordance with the code of the City of New Orleans.
  • To provide excellent customer service to the citizens of the City of New Orleans.

Who we are...

We provide businesses the ability to register with the Department of Finance, Bureau of Revenue, to obtain the necessary permits and licenses to operate a business in the City of New Orleans.

Every dealer purchasing or importing tangible personal property for resale and every person or dealer using imported goods subject to the use tax, shall apply to the Bureau of Revenue and obtain a certificate of registration. If your business is located in Orleans Parish, you are required to obtain approval from the Department of Safety and Permits and pay a tentative tax to the Bureau of Revenue.

Alcoholic Beverage Permits and Alcoholic Beverage Permits for Special Events are also issued by our office. The Bureau of Revenue also issues Permits for various street activities or callings (i.e. Mayoralty Permits). These include permits for bed and breakfast establishments , mardi gras vendors, mobile vendors, entertainers and artists operating in Jackson Square and Pirates Alley.

Some businesses are required to register, obtain a license, and collect and remit taxes to the Bureau of Revenue. These businesses will be mailed tax returns each month and will be required to remit the taxes to the Bureau of Revenue by the 20th of the month following the month of collection.

Once your business is registered with the Bureau of Revenue, you may request a Resale Exemption Certificate that will allow you to purchase items without paying the sales tax if the items will be resold in the normal course of operating your business. Non-profit organizations may also obtain sales tax, mayoralty permit, amusement tax, and occupational license tax exemptions for conducting activities benefiting their organization.

Again, Welcome to the Bureau of Revenue.
