City Announces Slate of Spring Films and the Addition of Two New Film Industry Businesses NEW ORLEANS, LA— Today, Film New Orleans, within the Mayor’s Office of Cultural Economy, released a list of first quarter productions in New Orleans. The film industry in New Orleans has seen major growth over the last year, with the addition of two visual effects companies opening offices in New Orleans, and several films in production this spring. duMonde Visual Effects is a creative collaboration between Richard Edlund, who has won four Academy Awards for the original “Star Wars” trilogy and “Raiders of the Lost Ark,” and award winning visual effects supervisor Helena Packer. duMonde delivers state-of-the-art visual effects and will be opening an office in New Orleans this spring. In 2010, 35 movies were filmed in New Orleans, with an economic impact of approximately $360 million in direct spending. New Orleans boasts the most diverse portfolio of film and television work in the state of Louisiana, catering to large studio features, small independent projects and a wide range of television and commercial productions Several projects are in pre-production to be filmed this spring: 21 Jump Street, Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter, Cogan’s Trade, and Memphis Beat. Currently in production are Looper, Contraband, and Season 2 of Treme. “Our unique culture, along with the state’s tax credit, has attracted an unprecedented number of filmmakers to New Orleans, bringing jobs to our city and boosting our economy,” said Mayor Mitch Landrieu. “New Orleans is an exciting place for filmmakers for many reasons,” said Katie Gunnell, Director of Film New Orleans. “Our culture and cinematic environment have helped develop our film-friendly reputation.” Earlier this year, visual effects firm Factory VFX announced that it will also open an office in New Orleans.
