The Hazard Mitigation Office is a branch of the City of New Orleans’ Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness. The Hazard Mitigation Office is responsible for identifying hazards that threaten the City of New Orleans and crafting a policy to reduce the loss of life and property from future hazard events. The ultimate mission of the Hazard Mitigation Office is to reduce risk from natural and man-made hazards and ensure the future sustainability of New Orleans.
Hazard Mitigation is any sustained action taken to reduce or eliminate risk to life and property from a hazard event in order to: Save lives and reduce property damage Reduce the cost of disasters to property owners and all levels of government Protect critical facilities and minimize community disruption Examples of local mitigation projects include property elevations, storm shutters, and drainage improvement projects.
