Online Microsoft Training for City Employees

The City of New Orleans Information Technology and Innovation Department is offering all city employees over 300 different types of free Microsoft non-technical and technical training in the following categories:

FREE MICROSOFT NON-TECHNICAL AND TECHNICAL TRAINING
Category Type Level Technology
Non-technical   (For all users)  Applications Basic, intermediate, advance Office Suite (Excel, Word, Power Point , Access, Visio, Project, etc.)
Technical Systems IT Professional Configuring Windows Client, Installing and Configuring Devices in Windows, SharePoint, etc…
Technical Servers IT Professional Designing MS Exchange, Grouping in SQL, Designing Business Intelligence Solutions for SharePoint, etc…

This free Microsoft training allows you the ability to build your skills and knowledge when working withMS Excel, MS Word, MS Power Point and more; helping you to better utilize these applications on and off the job. You may access this training at work or at home. Once you start a course you have one year to complete it, allowing you the freedom to move at your own pace. Invest in your skills and take advantage of this free offering provided to you by your Information Technology and Innovation Department!

Step 1:  Complete and submit the “Free Microsoft Training Web Request Form”

  • Once submitted within 2 hours you will receive an email confirmation that your form has been received. 
  • Within 7 business days you will receive another email titled “Instructions to Complete Your Free MS Training” from nolatraining@nola.gov it will include additional instructions and the access code to activate your MS Free Training.

Step 2:  Create a Windows Live user ID and password.

If you already have a Hotmail, MSN Messenger, or MS Passport account you may use this as your Windows Live “sign-in”, otherwise please follow these steps:

  • Go to the following website:  https://signup.live.com/
  • Create user ID and password that you will remember to sign-in to the training website.  You may use your City of New Orleans work email ID #####@nola.gov  to create your Windows Live account. 
  • Once completed you will receive an e-mail confirming your registration. Click the link in the confirmation e-mail to verify your new Windows Live ID

Step 3:  Use the access code provided in the email to complete the sign-up process

Once you have completed Step 1, submission of the web request form, within 2 days you will receive an email titled “Instructions to Complete Your Free MS Training” from nolatraining@nola.gov.  Follow the steps and use the access code provided in the email to complete the sign-up process for the Free Microsoft Training.  Below are the instructions you will receive in the email to complete the sign-up process however the access code is not included below, it will be provided in the email fromnolatraining@nola.gov.

  • Go to: https://business.microsoftelearning.com/activate/  ( must use Internet Explorer to access)
  • Input your multiuse access code (will be provided in email titled “Instructions to Complete Your Free MS Training” from nolatraining@nola.gov once you’ve submitted the MS Free Training Web Request Form)
  • Put in your City of New Orleans work email address then read and click the box “I have read and accept the Data Sharing Notice” then click send
  • Sign-in using your Windows Live™ ID (once you’re signed-in, in the upper right side of your screen you will see “Sign-out”.  This indicates that you are signed-in.)

Step 4: Review and select the free training courses

Review and select the free training courses you would like to take by doing the following for SA Application Training:

  • Click the Learning Catalog on the left side of your computer screen to review the courses
  • To sort through list, Click “Language” drop down menu  and select “English”
  • Click “Audience” drop down menu and if you are non-technical select “Information Worker” if you would like technical training courses for SharePoint, Project or XP select “IT Professional”
  • Click the “Collection” or the “Technology” drop down menu to see the categories of classes offered
  • Choose the course you would like to take by selecting the checkbox and clicking “Add to My Learning” at the bottom of the page

You will find all the courses you are enrolled in under the My Learning tab on left side of screen.  Click a course title to launch the offering. You may stop and start the course at your own pace.  You have 12 months from the time of launch to finish that course.

NOTE: You must have MS Silverlight installed on computer to access the free training; click on the link below to verify if MS Silverlight is installed on computer.  If you have administrative rights to your computer you may also download MS Silverlight from this link.   If you have any concerns, please contact the helpdesk. http://www.microsoft.com/getsilverlight/get-started/install/

If MS Silver light is installed you will see the following message on your screen

The version of Silverlight installed is:
Silverlight [latest version number]

You are ready to use Microsoft Silverlight
