NEW ORLEANS, LA-- Mayor Mitch Landrieu today applauded a private donation from the Pro Bono Publico Foundation to the New Orleans Recreation Development Foundation, the fundraising arm of the New Orleans Recreation Development Commission (NORDC). The Pro Bono Publico Foundation donated $15,000 to the NORD Foundation for youth programming at Taylor Playground in the Hoffman Triangle neighborhood.
“Our best tool to improve our economy and reduce crime is investing in activities for our youth which is why we continue to increase recreation funding and have completely revamped the summer jobs program,” said Mayor Landrieu. “The donation from Pro Bono Publico will be leveraged to provide new opportunities for kids who use Taylor Playground. This is an investment in our future.”
The Pro Bono Publico Foundation was formed in 2006 by members of the Rex Organization to help support the recovery of the city after the devastation of Hurricane Katrina. Generous donations by the foundation have assisted in the rebuilding of New Orleans and have created important public-private partnerships in many areas.
“We are greatly appreciative of Pro Bono Publico’s generosity,” said Vic Richard, CEO of New Orleans Recreation Development Commission. “The partnership that has been forged between the Pro Publico Foundation and Taylor Playground will go a long way to provide much needed programming and worthwhile opportunities for our youth”
"The Pro Bono Publico Foundation is pleased to make this grant to help support programs at Taylor Playground,” said J. Storey Charbonnet, Pro Bono Publico Foundation. “The Foundation, supported by members of the Rex Organization, has focused its giving on assuring that all the children in our city have access to excellent schools. We see NORDC programs at playgrounds like Taylor as one more important element providing opportunities for our children to grow and develop, breaking cycles of poverty and violence. The Rex den has stood across the street from Taylor Playground for sixty years, and we are proud to be active and contributing sponsors of programs here to support the children of our neighborhood. We encourage other organizations to support similar playground sponsorships."
Taylor Playground is one of NORDC’s most active and utilized facilities. It provides safe and fun opportunities for youth and their families to grow and learn through recreation. Taylor Playground houses one of the City’s 12 aquatics programs and has hosted Movies in the Park, the free movie screening program for New Orleans residents. Taylor Playground is immediately adjacent to the Rex den and the Rex Organization has actively supported the formation of a Friends of Taylor Playground Booster Club and the rebuilding of sports programs at Taylor.
“On behalf of myself and the entire New Orleans Recreation Development Commission I would like to thank the Pro Bono Publico Foundation for this wonderful gift,” said Roy Glapion, Chairman of NORDC. “Through the help of this organization we will be able to continue to realize the vision of creating a viable recreation program for our youth and all the citizens of New Orleans.”
“We have done a great job at leveraging resources through public and private partnerships,” said Mayor Landrieu. “I’m encouraging other businesses and philanthropies to invest in our kids as Pro Bono Publico has done today.”
