NEW ORLEANS, LA — Tomorrow, Mayor Mitch Landrieu, Health Commissioner Dr. Karen DeSalvo and City officials will unveil Fit NOLA, the City’s comprehensive plan to achieve healthy weight and fitness for everyone in New Orleans. In January 2011, the City of New Orleans was designated as a Let’s Move! city as part of First Lady Michelle Obama’s childhood obesity reduction initiative. The Fit NOLA partnership is committed to helping New Orleans become one of the fittest cities in the United States by our 300th birthday in 2018. Fit NOLA will work with partners to improve fitness and encourage healthy lifestyles. Nearly 100 organizations have been involved in this partnership.
Fit NOLA is focused on increasing awareness by providing resources for families and the community to be fit, and empowering youth to be advocates for healthy policies; building capacity by improving access to affordable, nutritious food as well as safe environments for physical activity and opportunities to exercise; and setting standards by highlighting successful programs and supporting policies that encourage healthy lifestyles.
