City issues advisory for parade staging areas on South Claiborne Avenue

February 08, 2013

NEW ORLEANS, LA–Today, the City of New Orleans asked the public’s cooperation to minimize Mardi Gras-related trash and debris in construction areas along portions of South Claiborne Avenue and Napoleon Avenue, where federally funded drainage projects are underway. The City is asking parade-goers to avoid lining up along these construction areas, and is asking parade participants to avoid throwing beads and other items in these areas.

The affected areas are South Claiborne from Monticello Avenue (near the parish line) to Lowerline Street, where construction is taking place as part of the Southeast Louisiana Urban Flood Damage Reduction Project (SELA), and Napoleon from South Claiborne to Carondelet Street, another SELA project.

Portions of these streets serve as a staging area for several parades, and some spectators traditionally line up in these areas in hopes of catching early beads and throws. However, effectively clearing these construction areas of parade debris will pose a challenge for the Department of Sanitation as well as project contractors.

City officials are asking all participants in parades to only throw beads and other items along their official parade route, as permitted by NOPD.

The public is asked to avoid construction areas, which may present a safety risk due to equipment and ground conditions from recent and expected rains.
