Mayor LaToya Cantrell

On May 7, 2018, LaToya Cantrell made history as New Orleans’ first woman mayor in its 300-year history. After that historic victory, Mayor Cantrell was inaugurated to a second term on January 10, 2022. Her passion for the City of Yes and her dedication to its residents remains stronger than ever.  

In her first term as Mayor, the Cantrell Administration was pivotal in negotiations to pass Fair Share legislation, securing $200M over five years for infrastructure, as well as getting voter approval in 2019 for a Short-Term Rental Visitors Tax and $500M Bond Authorization. In 2020, she also became laser-focused on protecting the public health and safety of the city’s residents throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, as well as demonstrating first-hand her commitment to creating a more equitable and safer New Orleans for all residents. 

In 2021, the City of New Orleans, under Mayor Cantrell's leadership, achieved a critical milestone in selecting a developer for the former Six Flags site in New Orleans East, which has sat dormant for over 16 years as a result of Hurricane Katrina. This symbolized the administration's larger approach to leveraging City-owned assets and creating a more equitable and vibrant economy for all New Orleans residents and businesses. 

As she begins her second term, Mayor Cantrell remains focused on the issues of public safety, infrastructure, affordable housing and improving the quality of life for all New Orleans residents.

TRAFFIC ADVISORY: Lane Closures on Eastbound I-610 for Streetlight Repairs

Starting Wednesday, April 17 at approximately 9 a.m., the Department of Public Works (DPW), in close coordination with the Louisiana Department of Transportation (LaDOTD), will close the eastbound left lane along the stretch of I-610 between Henry Thomas Drive and St. Bernard Avenue (see map). This closure is necessary to facilitate repairs by DPW contractor All Star Electric.

City of New Orleans Celebrates Completion of New $7.9 Million New Orleans Police Department Fourth District Station

Mayor LaToya Cantrell today was joined by Director of Capital Projects Administration (CPA) Vincent Smith, New Orleans Police Department (NOPD) Chief Deputy Superintendent Hans Ganthier, District C Councilmember Freddie King, III, Criminal Justice Committee Chair and District E Councilmember Oliver Thomas, Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) Deputy Infrastructure Branch Director Albert Waters, III and Mardi Gras Neighborhood Association President Carl Alexis to celebrate the completion of the new NOPD Fourth District Police Station. The new state-of-the-art, multi-story $7.9 million complex was funded by City Bonds and FEMA.

Office of Workforce Development Announces ARPA-Funded Leonard Merriman III Youth Pilot Scholarship Applications Open April 17

The Office of Workforce Development has partnered with the Tuskegee Airmen Flight School to offer scholarships to 20 high school seniors from Orleans Parish. The New Orleans Flight School is an aviation training program sponsored by the Tuskegee Airmen that promotes career opportunities for underrepresented youth in Orleans Parish.

City of New Orleans Announces Public Safety Preparations for French Quarter Fest, Issues Traffic and Transportation Reminders

The City of New Orleans today announced the public safety measures in place ahead of French Quarter Festival, which is expected to bring hundreds of thousands of visitors to New Orleans. Residents are encouraged to prepare for heavy pedestrian and vehicular traffic and to celebrate safely throughout the weekend.

City of New Orleans Department of Sanitation to Host Collection Day for Household Hazardous Waste Materials

The City of New Orleans Department of Sanitation today announced it will host a Household Hazardous Waste Materials Collection Day on Saturday, April 20, from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Recycling Drop-Off Center (2829 Elysian Fields Ave.). The event is open to Orleans Parish residents only (businesses and organizations excluded). Proof of Orleans Parish residency will be required in the form of a valid driver’s license or a motor vehicle inspection sticker.
