NEW ORLEANS, LA – The City of New Orleans announced that portions of South Carrollton Avenue, between the Pontchartrain Expressway and Stroelitz Street, will be closed starting Tuesday, May 28 to facilitate construction of the South Carrollton Avenue Streetscape Project. This is the third of three construction projects currently underway near the intersection of South Carrollton Avenue and Palmetto Street. Each project is associated with construction of the new Costco Louisiana Warehouse which is scheduled to open this summer.
A ground breaking ceremony to commemorate the beginning of construction on the streetscape project is scheduled for Friday, May 31 at 3:00 p.m.
“The City of New Orleans is committed to improving the drainage, traffic flow, and pedestrian accessibility around the new Costco Louisiana Warehouse.” Mayor Mitch Landrieu said. “These public infrastructure improvements are an example of targeting our limited resources to investments that will create new jobs, generate new tax revenue, improve retail options in the city, and facilitate redevelopment of a previously vacant property.”
The first phase of the streetscape project’s construction will include closure of both the northbound and southbound, far right travel lanes on South Carrollton Avenue. Traffic cones, barricades and safety signage are currently on site.
Later in the construction sequencing, traffic will be shifted to allow for resurfacing of the center and far left travel lanes. Traffic impacts will continue through the summer.
Additional traffic adjustments required as part of the Costco construction include:
Closure of Cambronne Street from Palmetto Street to Peach Street, to facilitate underground sewerage pipe replacements and re-paving of the roadway;
Closure of one lane of Dublin Street from the I-10 westbound off ramp to Palmetto Street, to facilitate underground drainage pipe replacements and re-paving of the roadway;
Closure of Dixon Street from Dublin Street to South Carrollton Avenue, to facilitate drainage improvements and widening of the roadway; and
Closure of Palmetto Street from South Carrollton Avenue to Cambronne Street, right travel lane closed to replace existing drainage and reinforce the roadway.
The infrastructure improvement projects on South Carrollton Avenue are funded with Disaster-Community Development Block Grant (D-CDBG) funds. The combined value of the infrastructure improvements projects is approximately $5.5 million. The scope of work includes replacing existing drainage, replacing sidewalks and driveway aprons, installing new Americans with Disabilities Act-compliant curb ramps, new flashing beacons, a new left turn lane onto Palmetto Street, new traffic signal at Dublin Street and Dixon Street intersection and re-paving asphalt roadways. The construction contracts were awarded to Fleming Construction and Roubion Construction.
Citizens should exercise caution when driving, bicycling or walking near active construction sites.
Costco is building a brand new, 148,000 square foot warehouse at the 14.7-acre site formerly occupied by the Carrollton Shopping Center. The project will create approximately 200 full and part-time jobs, utilize 120 prevailing-wage local construction positions, and result in a capital investment of over $40 million. The warehouse is expected to open this summer.
