Local musicians to participate in 'Getting the Gig' professional development course

June 04, 2013

NEW ORLEANS, LA — A new program that takes musicians through a series of courses to equip them with skills to professionally manage and develop their own music careers will launch on Wednesday, June 5, 2013. The program, called “Getting the Gig,” is presented by Sweet Home New Orleans, a local non-profit group that works to empower musicians economically, and the Mayor’s Office of Cultural Economy. It will be facilitated by Donna Santiago, an attorney and music industry professional in New Orleans.

A group of seven professional musicians have been selected for the pilot of this course, which will give them the skills they need to manage and develop their brand, accelerating their musical careers.

Classes will cover essential elements of performance booking, including contracts, negotiations, marketing and promotion. The course includes six class sessions that will take place bi-weekly, with alternating week lab sessions in which participants will take a hands-on approach to setting up materials based on the preceding class.

“New Orleans produces the best musicians in the world, but far too many have to leave town to have sustainable music careers. Sweet Home is empowering New Orleans musicians to make a living while remaining in New Orleans,” said Sue Mobley, executive director of Sweet Home New Orleans.

“New Orleans has world class music and world class musicians, but unfortunately, many have not always had access to the knowledge and support they need to build a strong and sustainable business around their art,” said Scott Hutcheson, advisor to Mayor Landrieu for Cultural Economy. “This program aims to help musicians up their game and maximize their earnings and opportunities.”
