NEW ORLEANS, LA – Tomorrow, Mayor Mitch Landrieu will meet with a delegation from Haiti, led by the Minister of Tourism of the Republic of Haiti, Stephanie Balmir Villedrouin, to discuss their mutual intent to enhance Haiti’s cultural economy.
In addition to their meeting, Mayor Landrieu and Minister Villedrouin will sign a Memorandum of Understanding in collaboration with the Haiti New Orleans Heritage Task Force that will lead to the development of a joint program that focuses on cultural tourism, heritage management and tourist police. The joint program will be executed through a series of Haitian cultural tourism capacity building exchanges and an addendum to the Ministry of Tourism’s Strategic Plan (architecture, historic sites, music, art, religion, and reconstruction).
Following the devastating earthquake in Haiti, Mayor Landrieu led a delegation to the country last year and committed to sharing lessons of resilience learned from rebuilding New Orleans post Hurricane Katrina. As a leading center for tourism and promoting the cultural economy, Mayor Landrieu will share how New Orleans can work with Haiti to build the capacity of Haiti’s cultural economy, building on the cultural riches of Haiti’s people, and Haiti’s vast historical and architectural legacy, beautiful Caribbean landscapes and the lessons and experiences of New Orleans in building its own cultural economy.
