Mayor Landrieu announces NOLA FOR LIFE Jobs & Opportunity Expo

October 02, 2013

NEW ORLEANS, LA—Today, Mayor Mitch Landrieu announced the opening of registration for the NOLA FOR LIFE Jobs & Opportunity Expo. On Wednesday, October 16, 2013, from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm, residents are invited to participate in the event specifically designed to create pathways towards opportunity and away from violence for young men between the ages of 16 to 30. The NOLA FOR LIFE Jobs & Opportunity Expo will offer a chance for job-ready candidates to interface with hiring managers and conduct onsite interviews for jobs that have been vetted to ensure that they are current employment opportunities.

“From Midnight Basketball to Group Violence Reduction Strategy to CeaseFire New Orleans and our Re-Entry program, NOLA FOR LIFE hears the need for access to more jobs and opportunities that help our young people succeed,” said Mayor Landrieu. “The Expo will invest in the untapped talent in our community by connecting our residents with employment opportunities and resources made possible by NOLA FOR LIFE, local businesses and community partners.”

Individuals who are actively seeking employment are strongly encouraged to register for the Expo on the NOLA FOR LIFE website or to connect with the Office of Workforce Development’s JOB1 Business and Career Solutions (JOB1).  Pre-registration will include the opportunity to sign up for special sessions during the Expo and receive  free transportation provided by the Regional Transit Authority (RTA).

During the Expo, registrants will also have the opportunity to sign up for resources provided by nearly 30 local institutions and NOLA FOR LIFE partners including information on skills development, apprenticeship programs, social service offerings and access to full-time employment that does not require more than a GED or High School Diploma. For those who require job readiness training to prepare for future employment opportunities, there will be a “job readiness boot camp” that focuses on effective resume writing and interviewing, proper business etiquette and attire and mock interviews. Registrants will also have the chance to connect one-on-one with industry professionals and entrepreneurs during the Expo’s networking session. Target industries for employment opportunities and the networking session include construction, hospitality, transportation and logistics and retail.

The Expo is sponsored by NOLA FOR LIFE and the City’s Office of Workforce Development, along with Goodwill Industries and the federal Office of Probation and Parole. Partnerships with the Louisiana Office of Corrections, the Regional Transit Authority and numerous NOLA FOR LIFE social service partners have also helped to make the Expo possible.

To register for the Expo visit www.nolaforlife.org or contact (504) 658-4500 for more information.

Launched in May 2012, NOLA FOR LIFE is New Orleans Mayor Mitch Landrieu's comprehensive murder reduction strategy to tackle the city's historically high murder rate. Recognizing that law enforcement alone cannot solve the murder problem, NOLA FOR LIFE takes a holistic approach to get to the root of the problem and implements initiatives in five main categories: Stop the Shooting, Invest in Prevention, Promote Jobs and Opportunity, Strengthen the NOPD and Get Involved and Rebuild Neighborhoods.
