NEW ORLEANS, LA – Today, Mayor Mitch Landrieu applauded the New Orleans hospitality community for making a significant contribution to the City’s comprehensive murder reduction strategy, NOLA FOR LIFE. On Thursday, March 27, hospitality industry leaders welcomed over 600 guests to a local fundraising event during which they presented Mayor Landrieu with a $78,000 donation to the NOLA FOR LIFE Fund. While the Fund has received high level contributions from corporate and philanthropic entities since its creation, this is the first time that an industry within the city has committed to mobilize ongoing support for the Mayor’s public safety effort.
“Last year, I made a specific request to the business community to get involved and the hospitality industry has now stepped up to help create safe and healthy neighborhoods for all of our residents,” said Mayor Mitch Landrieu. “NOLA FOR LIFE is working every day to create pathways away from violence and towards opportunity for those most at-risk across the city and I want to thank the hospitality industry for its tremendous partnership on what may be our most challenging issue.”
Launched by Mayor Landrieu in 2012, NOLA FOR LIFE takes a holistic approach; implementing 34 initiatives to create safe neighborhoods. From prevention to intervention to rehabilitation and enforcement, the comprehensive strategy seeks to improve outcomes across the city, specifically creating jobs and opportunities for young men and boys between the ages of 16 to 30. The NOLA FOR LIFE Fund, administered through the Greater New Orleans Foundation, supports proven local service providers that deliver high-quality programs and social services to young men most at risk of becoming victims or perpetrators of violence.
“NOLA FOR LIFE strengthens the fabric of our community, the people and the neighborhoods. It’s about building a greater city, offering better choices, opportunities and paths to success,” said Stephen Perry, president and CEO of the New Orleans Convention and Visitors Bureau. “As New Orleans largest industry, we are delighted to be a part of that and play a participatory role in ensuring a stronger, safer New Orleans of tomorrow.”
“We’re excited to deepen the relationship between our industry and NOLA FOR LIFE through workforce development opportunities,” said Al Groos, president and general manager of the Royal Sonesta Hotel. “Working in tourism is a life-long profession for many, and the industry provides career opportunities for people in every phase of their lives.”
The two-hour function at the New Orleans Morial Convention Center featured live music from the Brass-a-holics, catering from Centerplate, and exhibits by NOLA FOR LIFE service providers.
