City to Host Free Paper Shredding Event

NEW ORLEANS, LA— Today, the City’s Department of Sanitation announced that on Saturday, April 12, 2014 from 8:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., Iron Mountain, a storage and information management company, will host a “Shred Day” at the City’s Recycling Drop-Off Center at 2829 Elysian Fields Avenue. Iron Mountain will provide an on-site mobile shred unit to securely and confidentially shred documents for free. Residents may bring up to 50 pounds of documents to be shredded. Iron Mountain will shred mixed office paper, light cardboard and similar materials. They will not shred plastic, compact disks, DVDs or other metal (other than paper clips or staples).

Residents may also bring Mardi Gras beads to be recycled, in addition to the items regularly accepted on the second Saturday of every month. 

Regularly accepted items include: newspapers, junk mail, phonebooks, catalogs, office paper, plastics: #1 through #7, small metal cans, cardboard, boxboard (i.e. cereal boxes), and waxboard (i.e. juice boxes). E-waste (computers, laptops, cell/telephones, telephone systems, cables, X-Boxes, Sony Playstations, Nintendo Wii, MP3 players, DVRs, DVDs, UPS, circuit boards, GPS systems, ink/toner cartridges, digital cameras/picture frames, fax machines, beepers, pagers, stereos, security systems, televisions (limit 4) ), batteries (AA, AAA, AAAA, C, D, 6 & 9 volt), light bulbs (incandescent and fluorescent) and tires (limit 4).

Below is the remaining 2014 schedule for the Recycling Drop-Off Center.

  • April 12 – Shred Day – Iron Mountain will securely and confidentially shred up to 50 lbs. of documents at no charge
  • May 10 – Household Hazardous Materials Collection Day
    • Accepted items include: pesticides, chemicals, cleaners, bleach, acids, paint, paint thinners, grout, oils, gasoline, antifreeze, aerosols, mercury devices, pool shock, and flammable liquids. The City reserves the right to limit quantities
    • The following cannot be accepted: explosives, radioactive materials, medical waste, asbestos, glass, or hazardous waste from businesses or school. These items should not be thrown away with regular garbage or placed in curbside recycling containers.
  • June 14

  • August 9 – Shred Day – Iron Mountain will securely and confidentially shred up to 50 lbs. of documents at no charge
  • September 13
  • October 11
  • November 8 – Shred Day – Iron Mountain will securely and confidentially shred up to 50 lbs. of documents at no charge
