City to Host Household Harzardous Materials Collection Day

NEW ORLEANS, LA – Today, the City announced that the Department of Sanitation will host a Household Hazardous Materials Collection Day on Saturday, May 10, 2014 from 8:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at the City’s Recycling Drop-Off Center at 2829 Elysian Fields Avenue.

Items accepted on Saturday, May 10 include: pesticides, antifreeze, Drano, bleach, garden chemicals, paint (latex and oil based), paint thinner, varnish, flammable liquids, muriatic acid, mercury devices, aerosols, grout, pool shock, household cleaners, oil, gasoline, and automobile batteries.

Items accepted on Saturday, May 10 and at all monthly (second Saturday) Recycling Drop-Off Days include: paper (newspaper, magazines, office paper, junk mail, phone books, catalogs), plastics: #1 through #7, small metals (aluminum, steel, tin), cardboard, boxboard (cereal boxes), wax board (juice boxes), E-Waste: Computers, laptops, processors, monitors, cables, ink jet cartridges, toner cartridges, digital cameras, DVRs, digital picture frames,  stereos and speakers,  printers and fax machines, telephones (cords, systems, cell phones), beepers, pagers, uninterruptible power supplies, security systems,  circuit boards, GPS devices, Xboxes, PlayStations, Wiis, MP3 players, DVD movies and video games, household batteries (AA, AAA, AAAA, C, D, 6 & 9 volt), light bulbs (fluorescent  and incandescent), Mardi Gras beads, televisions (limit 4) and tires (limit 4).

The following cannot be accepted: explosives, radioactive materials, medical waste, asbestos, glass, or hazardous waste from businesses or school. These items should not be thrown away with regular garbage or placed in curbside recycling containers.

Below is the remaining 2014 schedule for the Recycling Drop-Off Center.

  • May 10 – Household Hazardous Materials Collection Day
  • June 14 – Recycling Drop-Off Day                                        
  • July 12 – Recycling Drop-Off Day
  • August 9 – Shred Day – Iron Mountain will securely and confidentially shred up to 50 lbs. of documents at no charge
  • September 13 – Recycling Drop-Off Day
  • October 11 – Recycling Drop-Off Day
  • November 8 – Shred Day – Iron Mountain will securely and confidentially shred up to 50 lbs. of documents at no charge
  • December 13 – Recycling Drop-Off Day

For more information or to register for the City’s FREE curbside recycling program, please call 311 weekdays between 8:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. These services are available only to residents of Orleans Parish.

The City reserves the right to limit all quantities.

Iron Mountain provides shredding service to the public, free of charge as a community service, in conjunction with the City.
