City of New Orleans Health Department Awarded $10M Grant to Improve Birth Outcomes

NEW ORLEANS, LA – Today, the City of New Orleans Health Department announced that it has been awarded a $10 million, five year grant from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA). The grant will continue funding for Healthy Start New Orleans, a program focused on reducing infant mortality and improving birth outcomes that has served the greater New Orleans area since 1991.

NEW ORLEANS, LA—Today, Mayor Mitch Landrieu and former New Orleans Saints player Steve Gleason announced that they will host ALS Ice Bucket Challenge on Saturday, September 6, 2014 in Champions Square immediately following the Saints Kickoff 5K Run.

City Urges Residents to Protect Themselves From Mosquitoes

NEW ORLEANS, LA – The City of New Orleans Mosquito and Termite Control Board (NOMTCB) has detected West Nile virus and St. Louis encephalitis virus in mosquitoes in Orleans Parish. On Friday, August 29, 2014, the Louisiana Department of Health and Hospitals reported a total of 61 human cases of West Nile virus statewide. At this time, no human cases of West Nile virus or St. Louis encephalitis virus have been reported in Orleans Parish.

Mayor Landrieu, Chief Harrison Welcome New NOPD Recruit Class

NEW ORLEANS, LA—Today, Mayor Mitch Landrieu and NOPD Interim Superintendent Michael Harrison welcomed the new recruits from Class #171 of the New Orleans Police Department’s Training Academy. The new recruit class started on Tuesday with more than 30 individuals.

Mayor Landrieu and Interim NOPD Chief Harrison Announce New NOPD Recruit Class

NEW ORLEANS, LA—Today, Mayor Mitch Landrieu and Interim New Orleans Police Department (NOPD) Superintendent Michael Harrison will announce the start of NOPD Recruit class #171. The class will receive 25 weeks of training and is set to graduate in early 2015.

Bureau of Revenue to Adjust Hours While Staff Implements New Sales Tax Collection System

NEW ORLEANS, LA – Today, the City announced that the Bureau of Revenue will adjust its hours in order to fully integrate a new sales tax collection system. The office will close to the public at 2:00 p.m. on  Thursday, September 4; Tuesday, September 9; Thursday, September 11 and Monday, September 15, 2014 and open the following days at 8:00 a.m. The office will also close for a full day on Friday, September 26, 2014.

There are no greater, more resilient people than the people of New Orleans.

Nine years ago, Hurricane Katrina and the federal levee failures changed everything — that day left our city in darkness — but we knew it wasn't the end.

We faced the biggest challenge any city has ever faced. But we believed in ourselves, we came together, and we came back strong.

Our mandate was clear — bring people together to rebuild New Orleans not as she was, but as we always wanted her to be.

Stallings Gentilly Pool to Remain Open Until Sunday, September 28, 2014

NEW ORLEANS, LA – Today, the City of New Orleans and the New Orleans Recreation Development Commission (NORDC) announced that the Stallings Gentilly Pool at 1600 Gentilly Blvd. will remain open daily until Sunday, September 28, 2014.
