NEW ORLEANS, LA – Today, Mayor Mitch Landrieu issued the following statement on President Barack Obama’s announcement that current HUD Secretary Shaun Donovan will become the next director of the White House Office of Management and Budget and San Antonio Mayor Julian Castro will be nominated as the next HUD secretary.

New Orleans Mosquito and Termite Control Board Advises Residents to Protect Themselves from Mosquitoes

NEW ORLEANS, LA – The City of New Orleans Mosquito and Termite Control Board (NOMTCB) has detected an elevated number of mosquitoes in the area, including the “southern house mosquito” which is the primary carrier of the West Nile virus. At this time, the Louisiana Department of Health and Hospitals has not reported any cases of West Nile virus in 2014.

City Issues Parking Instructions and Traffic Restrictions in Advance of Events this Weekend

NEW ORLEANS, LA — Today, the City of New Orleans issued parking instructions and reminders in advance of events held this Memorial Day weekend. The 2014 Greek Festival will be held Friday, May 23 through Sunday, May 25, 2014 at the Holy Trinity Cathedral complex at 1200 Robert E. Lee Blvd. The Anytime Fitness 5k Walk is scheduled for Saturday, May 24, 2014 in New Orleans East.

Nominees to Serve on the Sewerage and Water Board Approved by New Orleans City Council

NEW ORLEANS, LA – Today, the New Orleans City Council reviewed and approved the eight Orleans Parish citizen nominees nominated by Mayor Mitch Landrieu to serve on the new Board of Directors for the Sewerage and Water Board of New Orleans (S&WB). In addition, the Mayor appointed Wm. Ray Manning and Alan C. Arnold to serve on the new Board of Directors to the S&WB as syndicate members recommended by the Board of Liquidation, City Debt. The new board members will begin serving immediately.

City Sees Unprecedented Growth in Sales Tax Revenue

NEW ORLEANS, LA- Today, Mayor Mitch Landrieu, the Mayor’s Office of Economic Development and the New Orleans Business Alliance touted a 9.6 percent growth in the City’s sales tax revenue between 2012 and 2013. In the quarterly Revenue Estimating Conference, committee members cited positive trends in population growth and visitor attraction efforts as key drivers in additional revenue collected by the City.

New Orleans Recreation Development Comission to Host Meet and Greet with Local Authors

NEW ORLEANS, LA – Today, the City announced that the New Orleans Recreation Development Commission will host a meet and greet with local authors on Saturday, May 24, 2014 from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at Joe W. Brown Recreation Center, 5601 Read Boulevard. The event is free and open to the public.

NEW ORLEANS, LA— Today, The Welcome Table New Orleans announced open registration for residents to apply for a seat in one of the Welcome Table New Orleans Groups. During the last two months, nearly 500 New Orleans residents have participated in briefing sessions on The Welcome Table New Orleans.

City Opens Application Process for Access Taxicab CPNC

NEW ORLEANS, LA – Today, the City of New Orleans announced that the Taxicab and For Hire Vehicle Bureau has opened the application process for qualified drivers to apply for the Accessible Taxicab Certificate of Public Necessity and Convenience (CPNC). The application deadline is Wednesday, June 11, 2014.

Chiquita Announces Company will Return Its Shipping Operations to Port of New Orleans After Four-Decade Hiatus

NEW ORLEANS,LA — Today, Mayor Landrieu  joined Gov. Bobby Jindal and Chiquita Brands International Inc. Senior Vice President Mario Pacheco to announce the company will relocate its shipping operations from the Port of Gulfport in Mississippi to the Port of New Orleans. Chiquita plans to ship 60,000 to 78,000 twenty-foot-equivalent units, or TEUs, per year at the Port of New Orleans, representing a roughly 15 percent increase in current container volumes there.
