It is with a heavy heart that I share with you that Mr. Victor A. Gordon, Sr., longtime civic leader and president of the Pontilly Neighborhood Association, passed away last week.

Mr. Gordon’s community involvement and commitment spans over 30 years, during which he fervently advocated for improved quality of life at the local, state and national levels. For almost a half a century, he served as the president of the Pontilly Neighborhood Association (Pontchartrain Park & Gentilly Woods), where he was instrumental in post-Katrina recovery efforts.

His passion and commitment to his community certainly shined through his work. Mr. Gordon worked as an educator in the Orleans Parish school system for 35 years and he served on several nonprofit boards, including Neighborhood Partnership Network, Total Action Community, and Committee for a Better New Orleans.

Mr. Gordon was a friend to the Mayor’s Neighborhood Engagement Office and during a recent neighborhood spotlight article, Mr. Gordon encouraged other community leaders to represent all members of their respective communities and to collaborate with other neighborhoods to build a stronger and healthier New Orleans.

Mr. Gordon was tough, but fair. He held everyone accountable, but always offered solutions. Victor Gordon was the epitome of a true community leader. We will miss him.

Friends and family will gather on Thursday, June 30th for the memorial service to commemorate the life of Victor Gordon at 11am at St. Gabriel the Archangel Catholic Church, 4700 Pineda St. with visitation beginning at 9am. Condolences may be expressed online at www.tharpsontheimerfh.com.
