Activities for Adults 18+ and Seniors 55+

NORDC offers offers a wide variety of fitness and wellness opportunities for adults in New Orleans. Our goal is to fulfill the physical needs of our patrons by providing classes that are geared for all fitness levels and abilities. All programs are free to the public unless otherwide stated. 
 

NORDC/NOBA Center for Dance
Senior Dance Fitness age 55+

Registration ongoing. Start anytime. Blank forms are available from the instructors or download here external link external link external link. Comfortable dance or exercise attire is recommended.  Bring a yoga or exercise mat. (A few are available to borrow on a first come basis.) Schedule is subject to change. Class Description:  Stretching, cardio and dance, fun music, and healthy eating and lifestyle education. Other program features include performance opportunities, access to special master workshops, social events, and $5 tickets to select NOBA Main Stage presentations. 

Behrman Rec Center – Mon & Wed 10:30am-12:30pm 
Free Healthy Lunch Schedule: Senior Dance Fitness Session 10:30-11:50am followed by a healthy lunch at 12:00pm on the following days unless otherwise noted: October 29, November 12, December 3 (11:30), December 17.

Cut-Off Rec Center – Tue and Thu 10:30am-12:30pm 

Gernon Brown Rec Center – Mon & Wed 10:30am-12:30pm 
Note:  This class is temporarily relocated from Treme Rec Center.

TAI CHI 
Monday10:30am-11:30am 
at Lyons Rec Center Chevron Studio
No experience necessary.  Comfortable dance or exercise attire is recommended.  Learn skills to help focus and calm your mind, improve physical and mental balance, increase core strength and strengthen organs, muscles and joints.  Comfortable dance or exercise attire is recommended. Shoes must be removed prior to entering The Chevron Studio.

YOGA GROOVE

Wednesday 10:15-11:15am at Lyons Rec Center Chevron Studio
No experience necessary. Comfortable dance or exercise attire is recommended. Shoes must be removed prior to entering The Chevron Studio. Bring a yoga or exercise mat. (A few are available to borrow on a first come, first served basis.)  Transform your mind, energize your body, open your heart and ignite your spirit!  Comfortable dance or exercise attire is recommended. Shoes must be removed prior to entering The Chevron Studio. Bring a yoga or exercise mat. (A few are available to borrow on a first come, first served basis.)

INTERMEDIATE/ADVANCED BALLET
Friday 10:30am-12:00pm at Lyons Rec Center Chevron Studio
Experience recommended. While there is no specific dress code, we recommend that ladies wear modest dancewear including a leotard, tights (any color) and ballet slippers and gentlemen wear a tee shirt, black tights and black ballet slippers. Shoes must be removed prior to entering The Chevron Studio.A faster paced class for those who are comfortable with ballet curriculum. Students continue to improve technique, expand movement capacity, increase strength and improve flexibility. This class is taught at a professional level, moves through barre and center work, and uses the full range of classical ballet technique. 

ALL LEVELS HORTON TECHNIQUE
Friday 5:45-7pm at Treme Rec Center

Experience recommended but not required. Comfortable dance or exercise attire is recommended. The Lester Horton Technique is a rigorous and strength-building modern dance technique used by the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater.  Focus on fortifying basic Horton Technique skills including Primitive Squat Descent, Deep Forward Lunges, Flatbacks, Laterals, Release Swings, Hinges, Prances, Pulls, Triplets, Leg Swings, Tilts, Tables and Double Attitude Jumps.

HAITIAN KONGO & NAGO FOLKLORIC
Friday 7:15-8:30pm at Treme Rec Center

No experience necessary.  Comfortable dance or exercise attire is recommended. A full skirt is recommended.  Learn basic folkloric movements from two of the many nations/families in Haiti.  Class includes occasionally viewing video of the dances in their traditional contexts. 
 

Fitness Center at Treme Rec Center

Ages 18+ Jump on a treadmill, stationary bike or elliptical machine.  For the Treme Rec Center hours, address and other amenties, click here
 

Adult Exercise with Teddy Harkness

Ages 18+ Drop in anytime on this fun and invigorating and fun class!  Teddy Harkness, the jovial instructor, leads the class through cardio moves and core strengthing exercises.  Participants are encouraged to go at their own pace.

Aquatics

Adult swim lessons, lap swimming, and adult water aerobics are offered year round.  For the schedule, click here.   Additional classes and activites are held at outdoor pools across the city that are open only during the summer.

 

Yoga

Treme Rec Center Wednesday 6-7:30pm 
Zachary Ramsey III's leads this African Kemetic Yoga, a healing practice that combines controlled deep breathing and physical movements. 
 

Tennis

Note:  There is a nominal charge for court time at our two tennis centers.  Seasonal classes and ocassional programs are also offered.  For details, click on Atkinson Stern Tennis Center or the Joe W. Brown Tennis Center

 

Line Dancing

Cut-Off Rec Center  Tuesday 6-7pm and 7-9 
All ages.  A fun dance class featuring choreographed  sequences of steps that are repeated. $5 per class for ages 15 and older; free for 14 and younger.

 

Fit NOLA Parks

All ages.  Free, fun physical activities for all ages are offered at Taylor, Norwood Thompson, and St. Roch playgrounds.  For locations, schedules and other info, click here.


Piano and Voice Lessons

Ages 6+.  NORDC offers professional piano and voice lessons at several Rec Centers.  Each session culminates in a public piano recital.  For details, click here.
 

Outdoor Programs

All ages. Experience the wonders of nature in our own back yard.  For details about current activities, click here.
 

Movies in the Park

All ages.  Join us for free family-friendly movies on Friday evenings during the Spring and Fall.  The movies start at sunset but come early for fun physical activites.  For details, click here.
