Enforcing standards. Protecting life and property.

The Department of Safety and Permits is made up of nine divisions and bureaus, which collectively work to ensure that safety standards are met for all construction and use of buildings and properties in the city of New Orleans.

We are responsible for:

  • Administering and enforcing standards for the construction and use of buildings and property.
  • Promoting and protecting the public's interest and safety to life and property.
  • Enforcing City Code provisions relative to the regulation of Taxi Cabs and Motor Vehicle inspections (brake tags).

Flooding Notice

New Orleans is an area that has previously flooded. Consider property protection measures that would be suitable for your property, such as elevating your home, and to find out what sources of financial assistance or grants may be available to help retrofit your property.  We can even visit your site for specific recommendations. You may contact us to find out if your property is in a Special Flood Hazard Area.  Finally, be sure to properly insure your home for the flood risk.  It takes 30 days for a policy to become active and a standard flood policy does not include contents-contact a local insurance agent for more information.
