City of New Orleans Completes Hurricane Zeta Debris Removal
NEW ORLEANS — On Dec. 14, City of New Orleans contractors completed Hurricane Zeta debris removal. The City provided its debris removal contractors, DRC Emergency Services and Ceres Environmental Services, with maps that illustrated assigned zones and subzones. Monitors from Witt O’Brien’s documented that all debris placed curbside by Nov. 6 (or prior to the pass by the debris removal contractors on each street) was picked up in accordance with FEMA eligibility guidelines. Throughout the debris removal process, residents could visit NOLA Ready for updates on pickup progress in their zones.
Contractors have removed more than 72,261 cubic yards (cy) of vegetative debris, 4,444 hazardous leaning and hanging limbs and 94 damaged trees that have been ground into 14,754 cy of mulch that has been transported to The Composting Network in New Orleans East. In addition, more than 8,900 cy of construction and demolition (C&D) debris has been removed from public rights of ways.
The debris totals include volumes associated with items cleared from major roadways immediately after Hurricane Zeta by the Departments of Parks and Parkways, Sanitation, Public Works, NORDC, Mosquito, Termite and Rodent Control Board and the Louisiana National Guard.
If residents believe that their eligible hurricane-related debris was missed, please report via 311 by Friday, Dec. 18. If debris was placed curbside after the contractors cleared a street and the debris is eligible for normal solid waste collection and contained under the guidelines for bulky waste pickup, it will be removed by our regular collection contractors on the second collection of the week.
If the volume of debris is beyond what is eligible for regular pickup or if the debris is the result of work done by a contractor, property owners are responsible for the appropriate removal and disposal of the debris. Bulky waste guidelines can be found at nola.gov/sanitation.
