New Orleans Mosquito, Termite and Rodent Control Board Provides Mosquito Safety Tips

NEW ORLEANS — The New Orleans Mosquito, Termite and Rodent Control Board (NOMTRCB) today reminded residents of important safety tips to keep the community safe from mosquitoes and the diseases they may carry as the city enters its peak mosquito season.

Mosquitoes develop from eggs to adults in as little as seven days, and residents play an important role in preventing mosquito bites and eliminating mosquito breeding grounds.

Proper home and personal protection are advised. Once per week, inspect areas around the home, yard and porch, and eliminate sources of standing water where mosquitoes can breed.

  • Remove empty containers such as tires, plant pots or vases, wheelbarrows, jars and anything else that can hold water.
  • Repair leaky sprinklers or outside faucets.
  • Clean out clogged rain gutters.
  • Change the water in bird baths, pet dishes and children’s toys at least once a week.
  • Maintain pools by keeping them treated, clean and circulating.
  • Aerate ornamental ponds or stock them with commercially available larvicides or mosquitofish.
  • If using larvicides, always follow label instructions.

In the summer, especially during holiday weekends, people may spend extra time outdoors. Remember that structural barriers can prevent mosquitoes from entering the home. Use air-conditioning or fans if possible, and make sure window and door screens are in good condition to prevent mosquitoes from getting inside.

  • Cover gaps in walls, doors, and windows, and make sure window and door screens do not have holes.
  • If you will be outside for long periods of time, especially at night, wear repellents containing EPA-registered active ingredients including DEET, picaridin, IR3535 or oil of lemon eucalyptus.
  • When using insect repellent, always follow the recommendations on the product label.
