City Announces Temporary Shift to Once Weekly Solid Waste Collection in Service Areas 1 & 2

Will Bring More Consistent Collections During Post-Ida Recovery

NEW ORLEANS — Today, the City of New Orleans announced that effective immediately, it will temporarily shift to once per week solid waste collection in Service Areas 1 and 2 to bring a level of consistency to residents. This approach will effectively enable twice the number of trucks to operate in the designated area on each service day.

“Our emergency solid waste collection contracts are progressing well, but our team continues to focus on other complementary solutions,” said Director of Sanitation Matt Torri. “We are collectively beginning to see the progress on the ground, but it’s time to bring some predictability so that our residents can better prepare for their trash collection.  We are confident that this temporary move will help to get us back on track and result in the same amount of trash being picked up once each week.”

Contractors will collect the City issued 95-gallon roll cart, recycling cart (filled with household trash), personal cans, up to six trash bags and eligible bulky waste items at each weekly collection. Service Area 1 and 2 are currently serviced by Richard's Disposal, Inc. and Metro Services Group, LLC, respectively.

Beginning on Sunday, October 10, more detailed information about the new collection schedule will be available at https://nola.gov/sanitation/schedules/.

For Service Area 1, the City will continue to monitor progress to determine whether a return to twice-weekly collection is feasible in the near future. For Service Area 2, the City plans to initiate a new procurement within the next 60 - 90 days.  Once the contract has been awarded, information about the frequency of collections will be shared.

The sanitation fee will be suspended for the month of November and reflected as a credit on the Sewerage and Water Board of New Orleans bill.

Storm debris (vegetative, construction, white goods, electronics) will continue to be collected separately by the City's Emergency Debris Contractor - Ceres Environmental.  Residents can continue to track storm debris progress here.

Curbside recycling remains suspended as the City works to stabilize solid waste collections.  Residents can drop off their recyclables today (10/9) at 2829 Elysian Fields Avenue, from 8 a.m. until 1 p.m. For more information on future recycling drop-off events, please call 311 or visit nola.gov/sanitation/recycling.
