NEW ORLEANS — The City of New Orleans, in partnership with the Regional Transit Authority, University of New Orleans Transportation Institute, and Toole Design Group, has developed and launched a new traffic safety analysis tool, the Safer Streets Priority Finder (SSPF). The tool provides planners and engineers with a low-barrier method to conduct systemic crash analyses to understand vulnerable road user risk by roadway segments.
This product was made possible by a U.S. Department of Transportation Safety Data Initiative grant and is available to users nationwide.
The tool combines historic crash data and predictive modeling to develop outputs to identify and prioritize roadway safety improvements. This includes a Sliding Window Analysis that identifies severity-weighted crash densities along road segments; the Safer Streets Model, which estimates potential crash risk; and a data dashboard with summary visualizations.
The announcement comes on the first day of National Pedestrian Safety Month.
“This project underscores Mayor Cantrell’s commitment to safer transportation infrastructure for our residents,” said Laura Bryan, Director, Mayor’s Office of Transportation. “The Mayor’s Transportation Action Plan identifies safety as a top priority for transportation improvements and the Safer Streets Priority Finder is an analysis platform that can help inform future safety-based decisions.”
As part of the Cantrell Administration’s focus on improving transportation safety, the City and the RTA will begin using this tool alongside other analytic tools to develop data-driven safety focused roadway projects and seek grant funds through various state and federal programs. Additionally, the City will continue working with its partners to identify resources to expand the Safer Streets Priority Finder’s capabilities and features.
