City's NOLA FOR LIFE Midnight Basketball Reaches Milestone

NEW ORLEANS — The City of New Orleans’ Midnight Basketball season nine ended on September 12, 2015, with a total of more than 650 participants and 340 spectators. Midnight Basketball provides safe recreational opportunities in crime hot spots for young men through the game of basketball. Mentorship and educational support are also key components of this initiative.

Mayor Landrieu Statement on Passing of Dr. Calvin Moret

NEW ORLEANS – Mayor Mitch Landrieu issued the following statement on the passing of Dr. Calvin Moret: 

"We have lost a national hero with the passing of Dr. Calvin Moret, the last living Tuskegee Airman in Louisiana. Dr. Moret was a great leader who made incredible sacrifices and exhibited resounding courage. He was truly an ambassador for the city of New Orleans. My thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends during this difficult time."

Mayor Landrieu Statement on House Arrest Stay Issued by State Supreme Court

NEW ORLEANS – Mayor Mitch Landrieu made the following remarks after the Louisiana Supreme Court today stayed a house arrest order by Civil District Judge Kern Reese while the City appeals a contempt of court judgment issued by Judge Reese.

Saturday is Final Night for 'NOLA FOR LIFE' Midnight Basketball Season Nine

NEW ORLEANS — On Saturday, the City of New Orleans, the New Orleans Pelicans and PlayNola will close the ninth season of NOLA FOR LIFE Midnight Basketball. The team who wins the most tournaments of the season will win a $1,000 grand prize. In addition, all participants will receive New Orleans Pelicans swag.

New Orleans Medical Reserve Corps Receives FEMA Award for Community Preparedness

NEW ORLEANS — This week, the New Orleans Medical Reserve Corps (NOMRC), a volunteer extension of the New Orleans Health Department, was awarded the “Outstanding Citizen Corps Partner Program Award” at the 2015 Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) Individual and Community Preparedness Awards.  The awards are designed to recognize outstanding individuals, programs and organizations that are dedicated to preparing their communities for emergencies.

City Announces Glass Recycling in the French Quarter and Downtown Development District

NEW ORLEANS – The City of New Orleans announced it will begin glass recycling in the French Quarter and the Downtown Development District (DDD) on Thursday, Sept. 24, 2015. Empire Services, the City’s collection contractor in these areas, will begin collecting glass on Thursday of each week from properties eligible to receive sanitation services from the City. Eligible residents and small businesses can utilize blue or black bins with the imprinted recycling logo.

NEW ORLEANS - Today, Mayor Landrieu issued the following statement: "Public safety is my top priority, and there will continue to be real consequences for bad decision-making.  Today, Akein and Shawn Scott, the gunmen responsible for the 2013 Mother’s Day shooting that left 20 people injured, pleaded guilty in federal court."

NEW ORLEANS - With more than 80,000 patrons visiting City recreational facilities in the first six months of 2015 alone, Mayor Mitch Landrieu and the City of New Orleans today applauded a summer of progress for the New Orleans Recreation Development Commission (NORDC), including successful programming and openings of recreational sites and pools.

Mayor Landrieu Signs Ordinance to Promote Development of More Affordable Housing in New Orleans

NEW ORLEANS – Mayor Mitch Landrieu has signed into law an ordinance to amend the City’s Comprehensive Zoning Ordinance (CZO) to promote development of more affordable housing in New Orleans. Under this CZO amendment for zoning districts that permit multifamily dwellings, developers are now allowed to build denser residential developments as long as a portion of units are committed to housing residents whose income falls below certain levels based upon the Area Median Income (AMI).

City to Auction Four Properties This Friday

NEW ORLEANS – This Friday, Sept. 11, 2015, the City of New Orleans will auction four City-owned properties in the City Hall Council Chambers at 10 a.m. The Department of Property Management through the Division of Real Estate and Records will conduct the auction. Registration begins at 9 a.m.
