New Orleans named National EMS Service of the Year

October 29, 2012

NEW ORLEANS, LA – The National Association of Emergency Medical Technicians has selected the City of New Orleans Emergency Medical Services (EMS) to receive the 2012 Dick Ferneau Paid EMS Service of the Year Award. This annual award is given to one EMS service that excels not only in outstanding patient care, but embraces the latest science in pre-hospital medicine, community education, and has unique capabilities such as a tactical medic division, swift water rescue, urban search & rescue medics, and bicycle medics.

“I would like to congratulate the men and women of New Orleans EMS for receiving this well-deserved, prestigious award.  It is a testament to the hard work of our paramedics and EMTs, without whom we would not be successful as an EMS agency,” said Dr. Jeffrey Elder, Director of New Orleans EMS.  “This is a tremendous honor for both our employees and for the City of New Orleans.  It shows that over the past 7 years, New Orleans EMS has continued to grow as a progressive EMS agency, providing outstanding service to our citizens and our visitors.”

New Orleans EMS will receive this award at the National EMS Expo later this month in New Orleans. This award is given by the National Association of Emergency Medical Technicians (NAEMT) and EMS World, in conjunction with the National EMS Management Association (NEMSMA) and the National Association of EMS Educators (NAEMSE).

“I always knew that New Orleans had a top notch EMS department, and now the country knows we have the best in the nation,” said Mayor Mitch Landrieu. “The daily dedication and accomplishments of these men and women is truly amazing. I look forward to joining Dr. Elder and his team when they officially receive their award at the EMS World Expo.”

The Paid EMS Service of the Year award is named after Richard “Dick” Ferneau, a lifelong pre-hospital professional and early inventor and designer of EMS equipment. Ferneau helped revolutionize the way EMS professionals across the globe move and transport patients.  Many of his inventions are still in use today. Although Dick Ferneau died in 2009, his legacy will always follow him.

Prior to receiving this award, the last time New Orleans EMS was involved in a NAEMT award was in 2008, when EMS Deputy Chief Kenneth Bouvier received the Rocco V. Morando EMS Lifetime Achievement Award. The Rocco Morando award is the most prestigious award given to an individual EMT by NAEMT.

Media is encouraged to attend the conference’s opening ceremony and award’s presentation, which will start at 10:00am, Wednesday, Oct 31, 2012 in the Nouvelle Orleans Ballroom at the Morial Convention Center. Mayor Landrieu will give the opening remarks at the conference, and awards will be presented immediately following.
