Mayor Mitch Landrieu to join Louisiana chefs and musicians at Sandy Relief event in New York

December 12, 2012

NEW ORLEANS, LA— In an effort to demonstrate New Orleans’ support for the regions affected by Hurricane Sandy, Mayor Mitch Landrieu will travel to New York City with top chefs and musicians from New Orleans to host a holiday lunch for residents, first responders and volunteers on Saturday, December 15.  The effort is part of the City of New Orleans’ Pay It Forward initiative.

New Orleans award-winning chefs including Frank Brigsten, Michael Gulotta, Donald Link, Freddie McKnight, Greg Reggio, Stephen Stryjewski and Mark Uddo will prepare seafood gumbo, jambalaya, shrimp pasta, white bean stew, shrimp and grits, and more, all made with Louisiana seafood. Members of the Stooges Brass Band will provide some of New Orleans’ best brass band music and entertainment at the lunch.

On November 20, Mayor Landrieu hosted a NOLA Pay It Forward benefit concert with renowned New Orleans musicians that raised $50,000 for non-profit organizations providing Sandy recovery work. Mayor Landrieu first opened the NOLA Pay It Forward Fund at the Greater New Orleans Foundation in May 2011 to assist the victims of Mississippi River flooding and show that the people of New Orleans understand loss and the importance of helping others. The permanent fund has been maintained and activated to assist communities in need.

In recent weeks, senior New York officials traveled to New Orleans to discuss navigating FEMA public assistance and recovery programs as well as to learn more about effective long-term recovery strategies.

The City of New Orleans is partnering with New York Cares, a non-profit organization, in this effort. The organization will have 100 volunteers on hand, alongside the NOLA Pay It Forward volunteers, to serve meals to 1,000 residents and first responders, as well as run sports and arts & crafts programs for children. New Orleans non-profit St. Paul’s Homecoming Center is also helping coordinate the effort.
