City of New Orleans to accept a gift of replacement street name tiles from Spain

April 11, 2013

NEW ORLEANS, LA – At a ceremony on Thursday, April 11, 2013, City officials will host a business delegation from the city of Talavera de la Reina in Spain, who will present four decorative street name ceramic tile plates to replace four time-worn ceramic tiles in Jackson Square. The replacement tiles are identical to the tiles that mark the name of French Quarter streets during Spanish rule of New Orleans, and were crafted at the same factory as the tiles donated to New Orleans by the City of Talavera de la Reina in 1959.

The ceremony will take place in the second floor gallery of The Cabildo overlooking Jackson Square.

The tiles were sponsored by the Spanish firm Plus Ultra Insurance Company, whose president, Floret Hillarie, will present the tiles on behalf of Mayor Gonzalo J. Lago Viguera of Talavera de la Reina.
