NEW ORLEANS, LA – Tomorrow, Friday, November 8, 2013, the City of New Orleans will host the Fit NOLA Fall Forum. Fit NOLA is the City’s comprehensive approach to improving physical and nutritional fitness across the city.
Mayor Mitch Landrieu launched Fit NOLA in Summer 2012 as the City’s Let’s Move initiative, with the goal of helping New Orleans become a top ten fittest city in the United States by 2018, the city’s 300th anniversary. More than 190 organizations and stakeholders have joined in the Fit NOLA partnership.
Since the launch, Fit NOLA partners have secured more than $1.5 million in new funds aimed at implementing the Fit NOLA Blueprint, held five events aimed at awareness and capacity building for physical fitness and created six distinct working groups to improve the city’s health and wellness.
At tomorrow’s forum, Dr. Karen DeSalvo, City of New Orleans Health Commissioner, and Fit NOLA partners in the government, community, early childhood, education, health care and business and media sectors will provide project updates and a panel will spotlight organizations that are “Thinking Outside the Box” to address physical and nutritional fitness. The event will also include a “Fit NOLA Year 2” visioning session focused on developing goals for the Partnership’s 2014 activities.
Fit NOLA is focused on increasing awareness by providing resources for families and the community to be fit; empowering youth to be advocates for healthy policies; building capacity by improving access to affordable, nutritious food as well as safe environments for physical activity and opportunities to exercise; and setting standards by highlighting successful programs and supporting policies that encourage healthy lifestyles.
In February 2013, New Orleans was selected to receive the inaugural Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Roadmaps to Health Prize in recognition of the City’s efforts to build a healthier community. New Orleans was selected as one of six cities nationwide exhibiting strong community partnerships that help people build healthier, happier lives.
