NEW ORLEANS, LA- Today, Mayor Mitch Landrieu invited residents to attend a memorial service to commemorate and honor former South African President Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela in partnership with Honorary Consul of the Republic of South Africa in the State of Louisiana, Keith Adam Doley. The memorial service will take place on Friday, December 13, 2013. Activities will begin at 11 a.m. at the Mahalia Jackson Theater located at 1419 Basin Street.

“President Mandela’s passing has touched the hearts and minds of so many of us who cherished his legacy here in New Orleans,” said Mayor Mitch Landrieu. “It is only fitting for us to have a special memorial that honors his life and invites all of our residents to come out and pay their respect.”

The memorial service will be followed by a jazz funeral. The procession will begin at the Mahalia Jackson Theater and will travel down Orleans Avenue towards Broad Street, ending at the Zulu Social Aid and Pleasure Club headquarters located at 722 N. Broad Street.

In addition to the memorial service, Gallier Hall is hosting a condolence book signing and portrait viewing daily from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. that began on Tuesday, December 10, 2013 and ends Thursday, December 12, 2013.
