NEW ORLEANS, LA – Today, the City of New Orleans issued parking instructions and reminders in advance of the memorial service and second line to commemorate and honor former South African President Nelson Mandela scheduled for Friday, December 13, 2013.

The memorial service will take place at the Mahalia Jackson Theatre at 1419 Basin Street beginning at 11:00 a.m. Following the service, a second line parade will start from the Mahalia Jackson Theatre, turn right on Basin Street with traffic, continue on Basin under the I-10 expressway onto Orleans Avenue, continue on Orleans Avenue with traffic to North Broad Street, turn right on North Broad Street with traffic, and proceed to the Zulu Social Aid and Pleasure Club at 722 North Broad Street.

After the second line, one lane of North Broad Street from Orleans Avenue to St. Ann Street (right lane) may be closed due to large number of people expected to attend and to provide for their safety as traffic flows on North Broad Street.

Parking enforcement personnel will be monitoring for illegal parking, including blocking hydrants, driveways and sidewalks, or parking within 20 feet of a crosswalk, intersection or stop signs. Motorists are also reminded to park in the direction of travel on one-way streets, and with the right wheel to the curb on two-way streets.
