Mayor Landrieu, Walmart Open Hiring Center in New Orleans East

NEW ORLEANS, LA – Today, Mayor Mitch Landrieu, City officials and neighborhood leaders joined Walmart to open a hiring center for the New Orleans East Walmart at 5931 Bullard Ave., Suite 12. This center will hire approximately 300 associates to work at the new Walmart slated to open this summer.

The opening announcement ceremony was attended by representatives of Walmart, City of New Orleans Mayor Mitch Landrieu, representatives of SUNO, representatives of the Urban League of New Orleans, members of the New Orleans City Council and neighborhood leaders.

The store is hiring both full- and part-time associates. “We are excited to add a new Walmart Supercenter to New Orleans and bring good jobs with great career opportunities to the area,” said Michael Nowell, Walmart Store Manager.

“The Walmart Hiring Center is a testament to the new way of business that we have embraced in the recovery of our City. Wrapped around this multimillion dollar anchor project is a public private partnership that will introduce new jobs to residents and further stimulate economic development in New Orleans East,” said Mayor Mitch Landrieu.

“Today’s grand opening is a necessary and important step as we prepare to welcome Walmart to New Orleans East later this year.  The store will provide convenience to the people of the East, however the local jobs that come with this store have the potential to transform the lives of many New Orleanians,” said Congressman Cedric Richmond. “I commend Walmart for their strong commitment to the city. Their presence is a strong testament to the fact that New Orleans East, and the greater New Orleans region, offers an environment where business can thrive.”

“Walmart’s new location in New Orleans East will help the community flourish and create workforce demand in the area allowing our students to gain a quality job with opportunity for growth,” said Dr. Igwe Udeh, Dean of SUNO College of Business and Public Administration. “We appreciate Walmart investing in our community and setting the standard for other businesses.”

“Walmart is committed to improving the New Orleans East community by bringing more than 300 jobs to the area,” said Kendall Pringle, Walmart Human Resources Manager for the Greater New Orleans Market. “Walmart currently employs more than 33,800 associates at over 100 retail locations in Louisiana. We’re pleased to expand that number to the New Orleans East community.”

“This is an exciting business development in New Orleans East. It will provide the opportunity for growth and will be the start to a thriving economy in the area,” said Cathy Washington, Vice President of the Urban League of Greater New Orleans.

Walmart provides a benefits program to eligible full- and part-time associates. For example, it provides a variety of affordable health and well-being benefits including health-care coverage with no lifetime maximum. Walmart also offers eligible associates matching 401(k) contributions of up to 6 percent of pay, discounts on general merchandise, an Associate Stock Purchase Program and company-paid life insurance. Additionally, eligible associates receive a quarterly incentive based on store performance.

The majority of new associates will begin work in May to help prepare the store for its grand opening.
