NOFD Battles Two-Alarm Fire Above 7th Ward Reception Hall

January 24, 2017

On Tuesday, January 24, 2017, The New Orleans Fire Department (NOFD) responded to a 9-1-1 call reporting a fire at the corner of St Bernard Ave and N. Derbigny St. Dispatched at 9:58 a.m., the first NOFD company arrived on the scene of 1615 N. Derbigny St at 10:02 a.m.  Upon arrival firefighters found a two-story, wood-framed, mixed-used structure with heavy smoke coming from a rear second floor apartment. Taking into account the occupancy and size of the structure, a second-alarm was activated almost immediately at 10:06 a.m.  Firefighters were able to contain the fire to the apartment of origin and the attic directly above, allowing only water and light smoke damage to the reception hall on the first floor.  According to the two residents of the apartment, the fire began in the kitchen and quickly spread as they were able to escape.

Twelve NOFD units carrying thirty-seven Fire Operations personnel responded to this incident, bringing it under control at 10:36 a.m. One adult male resident was treated on the scene for smoke inhalation and transported to an area hospital by New Orleans Emergency Medical Services (NOEMS) for further observation.  One firefighter complained of sharp abdominal pain and was also transported to an area hospital by NOEMS. The adult resident confirmed to NOFD personnel that there were smoke alarms in the apartment but they did not activate.  There were no other injuries reported and the cause of the fire is currently under investigation. NOEMS and Entergy both assisted in the mitigation of this incident. The NOFD would like to remind all citizens to check their smoke alarms regularly and that the NOFD supplies and installs 10-year smoke alarms free of charge.
