One-Alarm with Injury at 1688 Claiborne Ave Determined to be Simple Arson

October 02, 2013

Wednesday, October 3, 2013 a New Orleans Fire Department (NOFD) company officer injured his back when he fell through the floor of an abandoned dwelling while performing suppression activities during a one-alarm fire at 1688 N. Claiborne Ave.  The NOFD was dispatched to this two-story, wood-framed, vacant duplex, near the corner of N. Claiborne Ave. and Annette St., at 7:51 p.m.  The first company arrived on the scene at 7:55 p.m. finding substantial fire and smoke coming from near the first floor entrance and extending through the second floor and left exterior wall of the abandoned dwelling.  While performing and interior attack of the fire, an NOFD Fire Captain fell through the floor in the rear of the building’s second level, injuring his back.  He was transported to an area hospital and has since been released.  Evidence found at the scene led NOFD Fire Investigators to determine that the fire was intentionally set, causing the incident to listed as Simple Arson (uninhabited dwelling).   Neighbors in the area stated that vagrants frequented the structure and materials found inside supported that claim.  Six NOFD units carrying twenty-one suppression personnel were used to place this incident under control at 9:34 p.m.  Anyone with information as to who may have started this fire is asked to contact the NOFD at 504-658-4713, all statements will remain confidential.
