Two-Alarm Fire Damages Multiple Dwellings on Duels St.

May 01, 2014

Thursday, May 01, 2014 at 2:24 p.m. the New Orleans Fire Department (NOFD) received a 911 call reporting a fire in the 1800 block of Duels St.  The first NOFD company arrived on the scene at 2:28 p.m.; finding a single-story, wood-framed dwelling at 1859 Duels St. fully involved, with fire coming through the roof.  Neighboring multi-unit dwellings on both sides of the fire building showed signs of exposure on arrival, prompting a second-alarm at 4:30 p.m.  1857A and B Duels St., an occupied 5-bedroom camel-back with an apartment in the rear, received severe fire damage to the rear half of the structure and considerable smoke and water damage to the remainder of the building.  1861A-B/1863, a two-story, multi-unit, wood-framed dwelling on the right of the original fire building also received severe fire damage to the rear half of the structure.  Firefighters rescued two dogs from an upstairs apartment of 1861A-B/1863 Duels St.  No other residents at either of the dwellings were home at the time of the fire.  The dwelling where the fire originated, 1859 Duels St., had been abandoned and unoccupied since hurricane Katrina and had no utilities servicing the structure.

Fourteen NOFD units, carrying forty-five fire suppression personnel were used to bring this incident under control at 3:15 p.m.  There were no injuries reported and the cause of the fire is currently under investigation.  New Orleans Emergency Medical Services, Entergy and the American Red Cross and participated in the mitigation of this incident.
