Krewes for Kops' 2nd Annual Event to Support NOPD

September 09, 2013

New Orleans, LA - Call it carnival for a cause. Whether it's to entertain the public or to aid city police, carnival krewes know how to throw a party.

For its second annual event, 'Krewes for Kops', an organization created from a majority of the city's parading Mardi Gras krewes, promises a rousing night of revelry at Rock 'n' Bowl that will include food, beer, wine, a silent auction, a parade of prizes, bowling, and music.

'Krewes for Kops' has made it an annual mission to provide for the New Orleans Police Department, and this year's gift will be a Firearms Training Simulator (FATS). The event is schedule for Thursday, September 12, 2013 from 7:00 p.m. to 9:30 p.m.

"We work hard to provide the best training tools necessary for the NOPD," said Chief Ronal Serpas, New Orleans Police Department. "This will greatly enhance our efforts to fight and combat crime in New Orleans, and we thank 'Krewes for Kops' for their continued support."

The simulator, used in an indoor training facility, expands shooting capacity during heavy traffic periods and provides training that is difficult with live-fire weapons.  It supports modern law enforcement firearms training, and encourages practice in a safe, low-pressure environment. Additionally, it reinforces marksmanship skills, judgmental shoot/don't shoot training objectives, concealed carry, and general weapons familiarization skills.

Since Hurricane Katrina destroyed its practice facility, the only place NOPD officers have had to train is at a Plaquemines Parish or St. Tammany Parish facility. The new FATS will be utilized at the rebuilt facility located in New Orleans East next to the New Orleans Fire Department firefighter's training facility. Cost of the simulator is $45,000.

"If you are looking for a way to help our officers fight crime in this city, here is a way to contribute," said Krewe for Kops organizer, Kellie Barnes. "Our Krewe in Blue' works long hours in every type of weather, and deserves to have whatever it needs to keep our citizens safe."

All money collected for the cause will go to the New Orleans Police and Justice Foundation to pay for the equipment.

The public is encouraged to attend. Tickets are $35 ahead of time, and $40 at the door.
