November 24, 2013

New Orleans Police Department’s Fatality Unit are investigating a Hit and Run car incident that left a 2-year-old boy in critical condition and his aunt, a 28-year-old woman dead in New Orleans East.  The incident occurred at approximately 1:10 A.M., on the I-10 Westbound at the High-rise.

A dark colored Impala was traveling Westbound on the I-10 when the vehicle became inoperable on the High-rise.  A passenger, a 28-year-old woman and a 2-year-old boy exited the vehicle.  The driver of a black Chevy Taho was struck in the back by the driver of a Ford Truck during the incident.  At some time during the incident, the woman and the baby where struck by one of the cars that remained on the scene or by a vehicle that fled the scene and were thrown over the rail falling to the ground.

The 2-year-old baby is listed in critical condition and the woman died on the scene.

The 3 vehicles remained on the scene however the driver of the Ford truck fled the scene.  Detectives believe other vehicles were involved in the incident but fled the scene.  Detectives are looking for one of those vehicles that fled the scene, a white Chevy Suburban unknown license plate with damage to the passenger’s side of the vehicle.

The drivers and passengers of the vehicles are believed to have non-life threatening injuries.

The investigation is ongoing and no citations were issued.

Blood and alcohol tests are pending and the Orleans Parish Coroner will conduct an autopsy to determine the exact cause of death.
