Academy’s Commitment

The New Orleans Police Department’s Education and Training Division (Academy) is committed to providing quality recruit, field, in-service, and professional development training programs which are centered in the best practices of constitutional and community policing. The Education and Training Division shall ensure that all recruits, officers, supervisors and civilian personnel receive comprehensive training to: understand and apply the law, adhere to policy and procedures, and effectively fulfill their duties and responsibilities. This training shall reflect the community expectations that officers’ police diligently in a professional manner; have an understanding of and commitment to the constitutional rights of the individuals they encounter; and employ strategies to build community partnerships that sustain public trust, peace and safety.

Initial Recruit Training

The Academy’s training for new Recruits consists of a 26-week (approximate) Curriculum that is designed to…

  • Provide rigorous academic, physical fitness, and tactical training necessary to perform essential functions of the Patrol Officer.
  • Align academic and tactical training with NOPD Policy, Louisiana POST requirements, Consent Decree mandates, and most pertinent practices for law enforcement training.
  • Implement the principles of problem-based and adult learning methods to foster an environment for Recruits to cultivate the willingness to work as a team to achieve a common goal.
  • Utilize on-going evaluation measures for refinement of curriculum, instruction, and test to best meet needs of Recruits.
  • Develop professionalism in Recruits through adherence to NOPD Core values of constitutionally based, biased-free, ethically sound, community-centered policing.

  •  Implement the principles of problem-based and adult learning methods to provide strategies to reinforce NOPD Core values of constitutionally based, biased-free, ethically sound, community-centered policing.
  • Reinforce proficiency in physical tactics skillsets and provide effective arms and equipment training
  • Deliver training in key areas that constitute Departmental priorities
  • Provide model supervision and management training to supervisors
  • Deliver specialized training to enhance the performance and capabilities of detectives in their investigation of criminal offenses
