New Orleans Wins MacArthur Foundation Support to Reduce Local Jail Population

NEW ORLEANS – The John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation today announced that New Orleans is one of 20 jurisdictions selected to receive a $150,000 grant to create a fairer, more effective local justice system. The grant is a part of the Safety and Justice Challenge—the Foundation’s $75 million initiative to reduce over-incarceration by changing the way America thinks about and uses jails.

Mayor Landrieu Issues Statement on Lack of Long-Term Highway Funding Bill

NEW ORLEANS – Mayor Mitch Landrieu issued the following statement after the U.S. Senate voted in favor of a short-term extension of transportation funding after the U.S. House of Representatives approved the same bill earlier this week. Funding for highway construction was set to run out on Sunday, May 31, 2015, but today’s passage of H.R.2353, Highway and Transportation Funding Act of 2015, creates another deadline in only two short months.

Mayor Landrieu Issues Statement on Passage of Trade Promotion Authority by Senate

NEW ORLEANS – Mayor Mitch Landrieu issued the following statement after the U.S. Senate tonight voted to grant the Obama Administration Trade Promotion Authority. Trade Promotion Authority paves the way for the President to negotiate strong trade agreements that will level the international playing field and create jobs by expanding U.S. exports. The bill now heads to the U.S. House of Representatives for its consideration.

NEW ORLEANS – Today, Mayor Mitch Landrieu issued an executive order aimed at clarifying to the nation that New Orleans is a welcoming city where discrimination in any form is not tolerated.

City Responds to Metropolitan Crime Commission Report

NEW ORLEANS — In response to a report issued by the Metropolitan Crime Commission (MCC) today that erroneously links the downward trend in overall arrests to NOPD force size, City officials explained the reduction in arrests is the direct result of smarter policies adopted and implemented by the City over the past five years.

NEW ORLEANS— The New Orleans Recreation Development Commission (NORDC) invites seniors to a Senior Potluck Social on Thursday, May 21 from 12:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. at Gernon Brown Recreation Center, 1001 Harrison Ave.  The event is free and open to the public.
