NORDC Summer recreation program registration continues

May 30, 2012

NEW ORLEANS, LA—Today, Mayor Mitch Landrieu encouraged parents to take advantage of the City’s summer recreation opportunities for New Orleans youth to be offered by the New Orleans Recreation Development Commission by registering their children for summer camps.

“From day one, our administration has been committed to providing worthwhile opportunities for all of the children of New Orleans, and this remains is a priority for us,” said Mayor Landrieu. “We are much better equipped to improve our economy and reduce crime when we invest in our youth and create opportunities that provide them with safe places to learn, interact and grow. This year our summer programming continues to improve and we ask that parents take advantage of these world-class recreation and educational opportunities.”

In 2011, Mayor Landrieu and the City Council doubled the NORDC budget. This year NORDC will offer 34 kiddie (ages 4-12) camps which can serve 4,965 children across the city through partnerships with schools, non-profits and faith-based organizations. This is 5 more camps than were in operation in 2011. The majority of NORDC kiddie camps will open on Monday, June 4, 2012. Registration is still open and will remain open until all of the limited spots are filled.

“The NORDC summer programs are a tremendous opportunity for New Orleans’ youth to be involved in positive and constructive endeavors,” said Vic Richard, CEO of NORDC. “We provide an amazing amount of resources that support our children and our city.”

“Commitment to our youth is extremely important and beneficial. The NORDC Summer Programs not only benefit and enrich the lives of our youth, but they enrich our city as a whole,” said Mayor Landrieu. “We encourage parents throughout the City to get their children involved in these well-structured camps, which will give them a great opportunity to have a memorable and constructive summer. “

The 2012 NORDC Summer Programming brochure is attached. On-site registration is available at each respective camp site as well as at NORDC headquarters, located at 800 Race St.
