City of New Orleans Mosquito and Termite Control Board advises residents to protect themselves from mosquitos

November 21, 2012

NEW ORLEANS, LA- The City of New Orleans Mosquito and Termite Control Board continues to conduct surveillance for and test for the presence of West Nile virus in the “southern house mosquito.” West Nile virus was last detected in mosquitoes in early October.

The Louisiana Department of Health and Hospitals continues to investigate previously reported cases of human infections and this week released 15 additional cases and a West Nile virus-related fatality. The virus can cause severe symptoms, especially for those 65 years old and older. Two of these severe cases are residents of Orleans Parish and one is from Jefferson Parish, no fatalities have been reported from this region.

Residents are encouraged to avoid mosquito bites by using a CDC-approved repellant and prevent mosquitoes from entering the home by maintaining screens on open doors and windows.

Residents should remain vigilant in eliminating or treating standing water, removing trash and clutter, and making sure culverts and ditches are clear so that water can flow through them.  Pumps for operational swimming pools and fountains should be kept circulating or should be drained and covered when not in use.

The New Orleans Mosquito and Termite Control Board continues to apply larvicides to storm drains and standing water, engage in source reduction activities aerial and conduct aerial and truck applications as warranted.

Residents are encouraged to contact the New Orleans Mosquito and Termite Control Board to treat standing water, report abandoned pools, or with any other questions or concerns, (504)658-2400.
