NEW ORLEANS, LA – Mayor Mitch Landrieu released the following statement following Pope Francis' accession.
“Today, the College of Cardinals elected a new pope, and on behalf of the people of New Orleans I congratulate the new leader of the Catholic Church.
Our city is one with a large, active and robust Catholic population. Today’s announcement is a special one for Catholics in New Orleans and Catholics around the world.
I extend warm wishes to and have great expectations for this papacy. The ascension of Pope Francis brings us the first pope from an American continent, which indicates the transformation of the world as we know it. I pray that with this change, we can all work together to bring comfort to the afflicted, alms to less fortunate and peace to our planet, and in the words of Our Family Prayer for the Archdiocese of New Orleans, that we are able to be victorious in the battle of today against violence, murder and racism."
