NEW ORLEANS, LA – Today, Mayor Mitch Landrieu and the Canal Street Development Corporation announced the first phase of capital improvements to the Piazza d’Italia outdoor plaza in the Central Business District. The Piazza d’Italia Capital Improvements Project consists of a series of enhancements that will bring the Piazza d’Italia back to its highest level of quality, increase pedestrian traffic and visitation, and allow for an active and vibrant program of events.
“Since 1978, the Piazza d’Italia has stood as an important public space that commemorates the contributions made by the New Orleans Italian community,” Mayor Mitch Landrieu said. “Today, we reaffirm our commitment to this architectural marvel and look forward to its increased visibility and use.”
The first phase of improvements totaling in excess of $250,000 will include development of more Italian-style landscaping, creating a green screen for visual privacy between the Piazza and adjacent parking lot, and development of ADA compliant restrooms with a HVAC system. Funds for this project come from the Piazza d’Italia Enterprise Fund. The Piazza d’Italia Capital Improvements project was initiated by the former Piazza d’Italia Development Corporation, which was merged with the Canal Street Development Corporation earlier this year. The improvements were designed by Torre Design Consortium of New Orleans and are being implemented by BelouMagner Construction of New Orleans. Phase I will be completed this summer. The second phase is currently in design and will restore the fountain to its full operational intent and repair other project elements.
Joseph M. Bruno, Secretary of Canal Street Development Corporation said, “We have a continuing desire to make certain that the Piazza retains the beauty and functionality that it had when it was first constructed. It stands as a monument to the contributions of the Italian-American community in New Orleans.”
The Canal Street Development Corporation is a public benefit corporation wholly owned by the City of New Orleans whose purpose is to stimulate business development in the Central Business District, and adaptive reuse and development of Canal Street. In addition to the Piazza d’Italia and adjacent parking lots, the Canal Street Development Corporation’s portfolio of properties includes the Saenger Theatre, Hyatt French Quarter Hotel, DH Holmes Apartments and parking garage, and Harrah’s New Orleans Casino.
