Mayor Landrieu to Join Partners, Community to Celebrate First Year of Welcome Table New Orleans

NEW ORLEANS — On Wednesday, June 24, 2015, Mayor Landrieu will host a special event celebrating the first year of the Welcome Table New Orleans initiative, along with Welcome Table New Orleans participants, the Kellogg Foundation, the William Winter Institute and the Urban League of Greater New Orleans. The event will take place at Mahalia Jackson Theatre and highlight the participants’ racial reconciliation projects and their commitment to the process.

Mayor Landrieu Elected Second Vice President of U.S. Conference of Mayors

NEW ORLEANS – Today, the U.S. Conference of Mayors (USCM) elected New Orleans Mayor Mitch Landrieu as its second vice president during the 83rd USCM Annual Meeting in San Francisco, Calif., positioning Landrieu to ascend to the office of USCM president in June 2017. Also at the conference, Baltimore Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake became the first African-American female president of the organization, while Oklahoma City Mayor Mick Cornett became vice president.

New Orleans City Planning Commission Announces Public Hearings for 2016-2020 Capital Improvement Plan

NEW ORLEANS – The New Orleans City Planning Commission (CPC) will begin holding public hearings this week to consider the 2016–2020 Capital Improvement Plan (CIP). The CIP is a five-year program for City expenditures for permanent physical improvements.

Fit NOLA Parks and NORDC to Present Hollygrove Community Family Fest on June 20 and Algiers Community Family Fest on June 27

NEW ORLEANS – Fit NOLA Parks and the New Orleans Recreation Development Commission (NORDC) are presenting  two free community family fests in June.  Both events will feature activities for all ages including field games, Fit NOLA Parks fitness activities, wet and dry inflatables, Bingo games, a 3-on-3 teen basketball tournament, Chevron Football Toss and giveaways, and a community resource area.  Free healthy food options will also be available.

Mayor Landrieu Calls for Flags in City to be Lowered to Half-Staff Through Independence Day

NEW ORLEANS – Today, Mayor Mitch Landrieu ordered all American and City of New Orleans flags on City property in New Orleans to be lowered to half-staff beginning at dawn on June 20, 2015, and ending at dusk on July 4, 2015, in remembrance of and out of respect for the lives lost to hate and violence on the streets of America, as well as the nine lives lost in Wednesday’s shooting at the historic Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal (AME) Church in Charleston, S.C.

The City is currently constructing an elevated pedestrian crossing over Washington Ave., the Washington Ave. Drainage Canal and Drexel Dr.

Mayor Landrieu Issues Statement on Passage of Trade Promotion Authority by U.S. House

NEW ORLEANS – Mayor Mitch Landrieu issued the following statement after the U.S. House of Representatives voted to grant the Obama Administration Trade Promotion Authority. Trade Promotion Authority will pave the way for the President to negotiate trade agreements that will level the international playing field and create jobs by expanding U.S. exports. The bill now heads to the U.S. Senate for its consideration.

New Orleans Recognized as 2015 Playful City USA Community For Fourth Consecutive Year

NEW ORLEANS– The City of New Orleans has been recognized as a Playful City USA by KaBOOM!, a national non-profit organization dedicated to saving play. This is the fourth consecutive year New Orleans has earned this recognition. The organization named New Orleans as a “Playful City USA” for making a commitment to play and physical activity by investing in programs and spaces that increase the quantity and quality of play in the community.
