CITY OF NEW ORLEANS SELECTED TO PARTICIPATE IN ECONOMIC MOBILITY LEADERSHIP INSTITUTE

NEW ORLEANS — The City of New Orleans today announced it has been selected to participate in the inaugural Economic Mobility Leadership Institute (EMLI), created by the African American Mayors Association (AAMA), of which Mayor LaToya Cantrell is a member, and supported by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. The EMLI project will begin in January.

“It is a privilege to be a member of and work alongside such an influential group of mayors in the African American Mayor’s Association,” said Mayor LaToya Cantrell. “My membership has granted New Orleans unique opportunities that will benefit our City government, our economy and all our residents. New Orleans’ invitation to participate in EMLI is a positive result of the meaningful work I do while traveling to advance our city. The innovative solutions that will be developed during this program will prove advantageous for all of our residents as we strive to strengthen all levels of our local economy.”

EMLI is a premiere 12-month program designed to provide a select group of AAMA member-mayors with the necessary tools to convene impactful financial forums on topics such as home ownership, insurance, land use and appraisals, student loans, trust and wills and overall financial management. Participants will also develop innovative strategies to increase long-term economic mobility and growth for their respective cities. The purpose of this program is to reduce poverty, build generational wealth and strengthen the economy in participating mayors’ cities.

Mayor Cantrell’s participation in the EMLI will greatly benefit the economic stability and growth of New Orleans, as well as aid our residents in becoming more financially literate. These topics align with some of the administration’s key priorities, such as affordable housing and homeownership opportunities, diversifying our economy and meeting the people of New Orleans where they are.
