Assistant City Attorney (In-House)

The City Attorney’s Office for the City of New Orleans (the “City”) is currently seeking a qualified lawyer to join the In-House Division of the Law Department.  The In-House Division provides legal advice to the Mayor, City Council, and all offices, departments, boards, and commissions of the City.  This includes legal research, preparation of legal opinions, drafting and reviewing legislation, interpreting and applying existing laws, and ensuring compliance with legal mandates.

Duties and Responsibilities:

The Assistant City Attorney will be expected to perform the following duties and responsibilities, among others:

  • Conduct independent or collaborative legal research and prepare memoranda for study, consideration, and implementation.
  • Review and respond to requests for public records.
  • Advise City entities on compliance with open meetings law and other statutory requirements.
  • Draft legislation and review proposed and existing legislation for form and legality.
  • Review departmental policies, monitor and ensure legal compliance, and advise management on methods of guarding against legal liability.
  • Review special projects, proposals, applications, and communications to ensure compliance with departmental objectives and applicable laws, rules, and regulations.
  • Review and advise on the implications of new or revised laws affecting the City.

Qualifications:

  • Applicants must be licensed attorneys, in good standing and admitted to practice law before the Supreme Court of Louisiana, and must be domiciled in the City of New Orleans.

 

  • Three or more years of full-time experience performing legal research and writing, drafting legal instruments, reviewing policies and legislation, and/or interpreting and applying legal procedures is preferred.
  • Previous experience working in municipal, state, or federal government is preferred.
  • A willingness to collaborate, a professional work ethic, and attention to detail are required.
