Assistant City Attorney (Litigation)

Description

The City Attorney’s Office for the City of New Orleans (the “City”) is currently seeking a qualified lawyer to join the Litigation Division of the Law Department.  The Litigation Division handles litigation matters on behalf of the Mayor, City Council, and City Departments.  This work includes legal research, judge/jury trials, administrative hearings, motion practice, appellate practice, and mediation/settlement negotiations.

Duties and Responsibilities

The Assistant City Attorney will be expected to perform the following duties and responsibilities, among others:

  • Conduct independent or collaborative legal research and draft pleadings and legal memoranda.
  • Represent the City of New Orleans at court proceedings, administrative hearings, depositions, and other legal proceedings.
  • Develop and implement case strategy and litigation objectives.
  • Review departmental policies, monitor and ensure legal compliance, and advise management on methods of guarding against legal liability.
  • Review special projects, proposals, applications, and communications to ensure compliance with departmental objectives and applicable laws, rules, and regulations.
  • Review and advise on the implications of new or revised laws affecting the City.

Qualifications

  • Applicants must be licensed attorneys, in good standing and admitted to practice law before the Supreme Court of Louisiana, and must be domiciled in Orleans Parish.
  • Three or more years of full-time litigation experience in State or Federal Court is preferred.
  • Candidates should also have knowledge of the statutory and constitutional laws of the State as well as knowledge of applicable Federal law.
  • A willingness to collaborate, a professional work ethic, and attention to detail are required.
