MAYOR CANTRELL RECEIVES APPROVAL FOR $35M FOR AFFORDABLE HOUSING
NEW ORLEANS — Today, the City Council approved Mayor LaToya Cantrell's request for $35 million to be added to the 2020 budget for COVID-19 response and affordable housing in New Orleans. The ordinances appropriate funding from the State and Federal government to the Mayor’s Office of Community Development.
"Funding affordable housing is essential to making our residents whole and essential to getting our city through this crisis. Now more than ever, we must affirm that all residents have a right to housing; the health of our community depends on it. I want to thank our partners at every level who are working to ensure that we can continue the long-term work of expanding affordable housing opportunities, even while fighting the challenges presented by the COVID-19 outbreak,” said Mayor LaToya Cantrell.
"On Tuesday, the Budget Committee unanimously approved two budget ordinances to support affordable housing. Today, the full Council approved the budget ordinances. Together, these ordinances represent a $35 million step forward for residents struggling with housing insecurity," said Jared Brossett, City Councilmember, District D; Chair, Budget Committee.
The funding will be administered through the Office of Community Development. This will allow the City to quickly respond to the compounded housing and economic issues related to COVID-19 by deploying funding for eviction and rental assistance, housing our homeless residents and supporting small businesses.
