NOFD Extinguishes Two-Alarm Fire in Algiers

On Thursday, March 14, 2024, at 9:36 a.m., the Orleans Parish Communications District (OPCD) dispatched the New Orleans Fire Department (NOFD) to a reported dwelling fire at 2900 Pittari St. in Algiers. The first NOFD units arrived on the scene at 9:40 a.m., finding a large two-story, single-family dwelling already heavily involved with flames extending through the roof and encompassing the entire rear of structure. It was confirmed that the home was occupied, and that the single elderly male occupant had escaped safely prior to NOFD arrival.

A second alarm was requested at 9:46 a.m., as the fire had consumed most of home’s roof and showed signs of becoming a threat to homes to the rear and right. The homeowner stated that he was in the process of cooking breakfast when he noticed flames coming from the rear of his gas stove. The homeowner also stated that he didn’t have a working phone, which likely contributed to a delay in notifying 911 and attributed to fire’s development prior to NOFD arrival.

In all, eighteen NOFD units supported by forty-one Fire Operations personnel responded to this incident, placing it under control at 11:09 a.m. It must be noted that NOFD did an excellent job keeping this incident contained to its origin. There were no injuries reported and an investigation will be conducted to confirm the cause as described by the homeowner. The American Red Cross has been requested to the scene to assist the homeowner with temporary shelter.
